RECAP

Childhood experiences, both positive and negative, have a tremendous impact on lifelong health. Much of the foundational research in this area has been referred to as Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Adverse childhood experiences increase the chance of social risk factors, mental health issues, substance abuse, intimate partner violence, and adult adoption of risky adult behaviors.

Adverse experiences and other trauma in childhood, however, do not dictate the future of the child. Children are resilient, and can thrive despite trauma if they form healthy adult attachment relationships (especially with parents and caregivers). Parents who have experienced ACEs in their early years may respond poorly to their children. It can affect parenting in a negative way and perpetuate exposure to ACEs across generations. But the cycle can be broken. Parents can learn how to manage their emotions and chronic stress through workshops and therapy.
